Dolmen Sa Coveccada

Mores

The most imposing dolmen in Sardinia.

Description

The archaeological complex of Sa Coveccada is located on a trachytic plateau, in an area rich in rock shelters, artificial caves, nuraghi and giant tombs.

Among the main elements are a broken and overturned menhir and a dolmen, the most impressive in Sardinia.

The dolmen, in grey-pink tuffaceous trachyte, measures 5 m in length, 2.5 m in width and 2.7 m in height. The rectangular structure has a door on the front slab and two orthostats on the sides supporting an 18-ton coverage slab. The back slab has collapsed, but fragments remain. The dolmen of Mores is unique for the presence of the door, which connects it to the tombs of giants, and for the two niches, one for votive offerings and the other for a significant burial.

At a short distance is the menhir, broken and 2.40 m high.
