Description
Nestled on the southern slopes of Monte Lachesos, Mores is marked by the towering bell tower of the Santa Caterina parish church—the tallest in Sardinia—which has become a symbol of the community. Mores is also known as the “village of the fairies”, thanks to the many domus de janas scattered throughout the area.
Among these, Su Cunnu ‘e S’Acca and S’Istampa de sas fadas stand out, while the Su Puttu Porchinu cave, though entirely natural, contains traces of ancient human presence.
One of the most important archaeological monuments is the Sa Covaccada dolmen, considered one of the world’s most significant prehistoric megalithic structures. On the southern slope of nearby Monte Santo, you’ll find Su crastu de Santu Eliseu, a prehistoric tomb later converted into a hermitage during the Middle Ages.
In the town center, near the Capuchin friars’ convent, are the churches of Sant’Antonio and Santa Croce, while in the countryside the rural sanctuaries of San Giovanni Battista, Santa Lucia di Lachesos, and Nostra Signora di Todorache are well preserved.
Mores is also famous for its centenarians, its exceptional pecorino cheeses produced by the Local Breeders’ Cooperative, and in recent years, for its autodrome—the only racetrack in Sardinia capable of hosting professional car and motorcycle races.
